7 p.m. Screening of New Film submission
Southwest Premiere of Chinese Restaurants: Latin Passions
Screened at Sundance and the Toronto Film Festival, this lively, fascinating feature documentary tells the poignant story of Chinese immigrants who have opened restaurants in such unlikely locales as Lima, Peru, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

7:30-10 p.m. Screening of "Like Water for Chocolate" (Mexican) — The magical realism saga of Tita, a young girl who is only able to express her passions through her food which has the power to make people experience what she feels. 9:30-11:30 a.m. Screening of "Wedding Banquet" (Chinese) — The hilarious tale of a gay man in America who tries to placate his parents back in Taiwan by telling them he is marrying. His plan backfires when his parents arrive in New York to plan his elaborate wedding banquet. For mature audiences only. Grand Cinemas, Oracle View, 4690 N. Oracle.

Sweet Dreams—animation, (10 minutes). Residents of Sugar Land find a new, more healthy way to eat.

Ripe for Change—groundbreaking feature documentary (1 hour), traces the evolution of sustainable, local and precious farming and cooking in California where it all started. Cameo appearances by Alice Waters, owner of Chez Panisse, and second-generation farmer David Mas Masumoto, author of Epitaph for a Peach.

Cook for Your Life—animation (19 minutes). Three desperate farm animals, slated to become meals, team up to convince their farmer-owner to turn vegetarian.

Die Flugbegieterin—feature (10 minutes). A German flight attendant, fired for obesity, takes a drastic measure to lose weight but will it stay off?

In The Wake—feature (20 minutes). Following Hurricane Katrina, nothing spells home, normality and hope for New Orleans residents than the city’s unique cuisine.

The Sacred Food—documentary (5 minutes). A meditation on the harvesting and meaning of wild rice among the Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota and the threat of GMO (genetically modified organisms) stock.
